Senator Proposes Legislation to Strengthen Social Security

The bill would raise the income threshold on which Social Security recipients pay taxes.

U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee has proposed the Retirees First Act, which would raise the level of income required for federal taxes to be paid on Social Security.

Senator Blackburn said, “The message to seniors is really pretty simple. We are going to strengthen Social Security. That is our goal. And one of the ways we’re doing that is by rooting out waste, fraud, abuse.”

The senator highlighted the effort to end fraud so that legitimate recipients receive all their benefits. She said, “What we’re doing is strengthening. We are not cutting. What we are doing is making certain that people that are defrauding the system, people who are abusing the system, are no longer going to be able to do that. People that have paid into Social Security deserve to get every penny that they are in line to receive as a benefit, and we want to make certain that that happens.”

Senator Blackburn also responded to DOGE reports that 6,300 illegal aliens with criminal ties received Social Security numbers and Medicaid benefits under the previous administration. She called it a “blatant misuse of tax dollars.”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently announced the arrest of over a dozen illegal aliens, from Honduras, Mexico, and Guatemala, who face criminal charges for identity theft related to false Social Security numbers and fraudulent employment practices. Local law enforcement joined with ICE, U.S. Customs And Border Patrol, and the U.S. Department of Labor in an inter-agency operation.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senator Blackburn and her colleagues in both houses of Congress as they consider ways to protect Social Security benefits for legitimate recipients.
  • For wisdom for administrative law judges as they hear challenges to the Social Security Administration’s denials of payout claims.
  • For ICE, CBP, and Labor officials as they seek to bring Social Security fraud perpetrators to justice.
